Information for Professionals/Researchers
Project The impact of mindfulness-based physical activity intervention on positive body image of young women. Supported by Lithuanian Research Council (grant No. P-MIP-22-7). 2022-2025. Positive body image is a multifaceted construct comprising appreciation of the body and its’ functionality, awareness and attentiveness to the body’s needs and the ability to process body–related information in a self-protective way. Recent research findings suggested that positive body image is related to greater psychological health and health–related lifestyle. However, the promotion of positive body image needs more scientific support. Enhancing media literacy and strengthening resistance to media-promoted stereotyped body images, increasing self-esteem, the functionality of the body, and self-compassion are the main targets of interventions in programs that aim to promote positive body image. Physical activity as the target of intervention has been rarely used in these programs. The first interventions that aimed to test the effect of physical activity on positive body image were implemented by testing yoga. Evidence from several studies suggested that yoga effectively increased positive body image in adult participants. However, the long-term effect is unknown. There are also unclear how different physical activities (i.e., functional training) might affect positive body image. There is some evidence that yoga might promote positive body image through increased mindfulness in physical activity, but the evidence is insufficient. More focus on mindfulness in physical activity was concentrated in recent years, however, there is still much work to be done to better understand the role of mindfulness in physical activity experiences and its role in the associations between physical activity, physical activity motivation and positive body image. The aim of the present project is to test the effect of mindfulness-based physical activity intervention for the promotion of positive body image in young women. We plan an intervention that will last 8 weeks. Two experimental and control groups will participate in the experiment. Student–aged women will participate in the intervention voluntarily. They will be randomly assigned to the first or second experimental groups. The first group will take part in yoga and the second group will participate in functional training workouts where principles of mindfulness will be applied. The control group will not participate in any physical activities. Experimental groups will participate in mindfulness-based physical activities in fitness centres twice per week. The changes in positive body image, intuitive exercise, mindfulness in physical activity, exercise habits, disordered eating and self-esteem will be tested with a pre-test, post-test and 1-year follow-up. The control group will be tested at parallel times. We expect to provide evidence from this research in several scientific articles published in WOS journals with the IF>2. We will also develop recommendations for institutions that are responsible for health promotion and public health in young people.
Body Image in Nature Survey: An International, Collaborative Project (BINS). The BINS is an international, collaborative project with the primary aim of examining cross-sectional associations between nature exposure and positive body image across different world regions. By involving researchers from multiple sites across the globe, the BINS will produce one of the largest datasets examining the impact of nature exposure across countries. In so doing, the BINS will be able to help determine the extent to which nature exposure is reliably associated with more positive body image. The BINS is led by Prof Viren Swami (Anglia Ruskin University and Perdana University), Prof Stefan Stieger (Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences), Prof Ulrich S. Tran and Prof Martin Voracek (University of Vienna). The project commenced in late 2020, data collection completed by December 2021.

HAPIEE study (Health, Alcohol and Psychosocial Factors in Eastern Europe) is the multi-centre study HAPIEE study assessing the effects of dietary factors, alcohol consumption and psychosocial factors on health is being conducted in random samples of men and women aged 45-64 selected in Russia (city of Novosibirsk), Poland (2 districts of Krakow), Lithuania (city of Kaunas) and the Czech Republic (2 cities) – four countries of Central and Eastern Europe undergoing rapid social and economic transition. The HAPIEE study was funded by grants from
the Wellcome Trust (Grant No. 064947/Z/01/Z), the US National Institute on Aging (Grant No. IR0I AG23522-01) and the MacArthur Foundation (Health and Social Upheaval Network).
Countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CCEE) have among the highest mortality in the world, and the mortality crisis in the former Soviet Union (FSU) is unprecedented. This is almost entirely due to non-communicable diseases (NCD), particularly cardiovascular disease (CVD), most of which is coronary heart disease (CHD). The high rates of ill health, the close link between political and socio-economic factors and health, and the rapid changes in CCEE/FSU offer a unique opportunity to study the aetiology of CHD and other NCD. Classical risk factors, such as smoking and blood pressure, provide only a partial explanation for the high mortality.

The BINS is led by Prof Viren Swami (Anglia Ruskin University and Perdana University), Prof Stefan Stieger (Karl
Landsteiner University of Health Sciences), Prof Ulrich S. Tran and Prof Martin Voracek (University of Vienna). The project commenced in late 2020, with all data collection expected to be completed by December 2021. The Body Image in Nature Survey (BINS) is currently seeking
international collaborators who would like to be involved in the
